What is Humane Society?

A group that’s main goal is to stop suffering of animals or humans as a result of abuse, cruelty or any similar reasons is called a humane society. In various countries, the term is being used primarily for societies to prevent cruelty to animals. In the UK however, this can be a society that is also offering waterways rescue, recovery service or an award that’s given for saving a human life.

In the US, the first humane society was ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, founded by Henry Bergh in New York City in 1866. Then just after two years it was founded, the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or MSPCA was formed. In the year 2012, the Oregon Humane Society snagged the largest portion of animals in the US with about 97 percent adoption rate and also, 98 percent save rate for an estimated 11000 adoptions made every single year.

As for the Humane Societies that are operating in the US, they are all independent of similarly named national organizations like for example, the ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the HSUS or Humane Society of the United States. While the local organizations are primarily concerned with sheltering, euthanasia of animals and adoption, these national organizations are coordinating and addressing bigger issues that are beyond the resources or scope of independent, smaller groups.

As a matter of fact, Humane Society of the United States doesn’t operate, fund or control local groups. However, it does provide supporting grants, training of the animal care personnel, evaluation services and standards of care. HSUS are frequently working with shelters in large scale animal rescues and disaster operations, assisting in the triage, evaluation, transport and care of the rescued animals. HSUS provides a well national promotion of animal adoptions and shelters either done in partnership with other known animal protection charities or on their own.

Back in 1994, Chronicle of Philanthropy which is an industry publication has released the results of the biggest study of non-profit and charitable organization credibility and popularity. Out of the 100 non-profit charities in the US, it revealed that the Humane Society of the United States is on the 6th spot.

Some of the local humane society shelters are being referred as No Kill. This is described as a shelter wherein animals are euthanized for two reasons, if they’re suffering from an untreatable medical condition and when they have serious behavior problems which makes them unfit for adoption.
